Your Body Language and the Impact on Your Horse

September 15, 20252 min read

Why your body speaks louder than words.

You can say all the right things, but your horse doesn’t speak English. What they do understand - instantly - is body language.

Every movement you make in the saddle (or on the ground) sends a message. A tight shoulder, a held breath, or a heavy hand can change how your horse moves long before you pick up the reins.

How tension shows up.

It’s not always obvious, but your horse notices. Common signs of rider tension include:

  • Clamped thighs or knees - horse shortens stride.

  • Holding breath - horse gets tight in the back.

  • Fixed shoulders or arms - horse loses softness in contact.

  • Stiff posture - horse mirrors it with a hollow frame.

Often, what we label as a “naughty horse” is actually just a horse reacting to tension in us.

The power of softening.

The flip side is just as powerful: when you release, your horse releases.

  • Exhale deeply → horse blows out.

  • Relax your thigh → horse swings through the back.

  • Drop your shoulders → horse lengthens stride.

It doesn’t mean being floppy. It means being elastic, balanced, and aware of what your horse is reflecting back to you.

Why awareness matters.

Horses live in the moment. They don’t judge your last ride or your future goals. They just respond to what you’re bringing right now.

That’s good news. It means you don’t have to be perfect - you just need to notice what your body is saying, and adjust in small, manageable steps.

Your horse is the mirror. Change your body, and you’ll change the picture.
